“Glorious things of you are spoken” - Austria.
“Led like a lamb to the slaughter” - Kendrick.
“City of God” - Richmond.
“Where cross the crowded ways of life” - Fulda.
“Jerusalem the golden” = Ewing.
This morning at Parish Communion we sang:
Praise to the holiest - Gerontius
All creatures of our God and King, all 7 verses, - lasst uns erfreuen
For I’m building a people of power.
Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour- St Helens.
During Communion the choir sang My God and is thy table spread- Rockingham
Tonight at Evensong we shall sing:
Alleliua, hearts to heaven and voices raise- Lux Eloi
For the beauty of the earth- England’s Lane
Now the green blade riseth- Noel Nouvelet
God that madest earth and heaven- Ar hyd y nos
Anthem - Like the murmur of the dove’s song- Alan Smith
Responses- Southwell
canticles- Hylton Stewart in C
Psalm 88 to Havergal
I went with Darwall in the end. The rest were:
Give thanks with a grateful heart (GO WEST, almost)
There's a wideness in God's mercy (CROSS OF JESUS)
Healing river of the Spirit (LEWIS FOLK MELODY)
We sing a love (WOODLANDS)
Whoever "modernised" your hymnbook ought to be hung, drawn and quartered.
“Behold! the mountain of the Lord” (Glasgow).
That almost makes up for it; I always missed "Glasgow" when we were in Canada, as it wasn't in either of the hymnbooks we used, and I'm rather fond of it.
Our offerings today:
Alleluia, alleluia, hearts to heaven (Lux Eoi) An upper room did our Lord prepare (O Waly, Waly) Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour (St. Helen) Bread of heaven, on thee we feed (Bread of Heaven) Light's abode, celestial Salem (Regent's Square)
<snip>
That almost makes up for it; I always missed "Glasgow" when we were in Canada, as it wasn't in either of the hymnbooks we used, and I'm rather fond of it.
Me too! Such a splendidly joyous fanfare of a tune, and such a good setting for the metrical paraphrase of Isaiah.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Hearts to heaven and voice raise (Lux Eoi)
Ye holy angels bright (Darwall 148th)
Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour (St Helen)
O Jesus I have promised (Wolvercote)
Unfortunately we are still not allowed to sing more than the hymns despite having a willing choir. Our minister is quite paranoid.
It takes a lot to get rid of a troublesome priest as you may be aware ( consider the case of a recently appointed and now departed RC priest not all that far from you).

Sunday morning - Holy Communion O God unseen, yet ever near St Flavian For the beauty of the earth England's Lane Shepherd of souls refresh and bless St. Agnes
Evening Prayer
Usual chants for the canticles, but I managed to forget the office hymn as I was badly off kilter due to KS and family being missing, and the wife being in what I bluntly call b*tch mode, which was something I did not need, as I have to watch for her savaging folks. Who are these like stars appearing All Saints
[/i]Come down, O love divine[/i] Down Ampney Holy God, we praise thy name Te Deum
I've been getting my preparations in early for the coming Sunday and also got to choose the hymns as I'm not back from travelling until Sunday morning. We're having
Blessing and honour and glory and power (BONNIE GEORGE CAMPBELL)
The king of love (DOMINUS REGET ME)
The church's one foundation (AURELIA)
Halle, halle, hallelujah (HALLE HALLE) with the verses by Marty Haugen
Jesus the Lord said I am the bread (YISU NE KAHA)
(15 May)
God is love, and where true love is (UBI CARITAS [MURRAY])
Love divine, all loves excelling (BLAENWERN)
O holy city, seen of John (LYDNEY)
Lord, whose love through humble service (BLAENHAFREN)
Our offerings today (most of which were pitched rather stratospherically, despite the appliance organ having a "change key" button):
Breathe on me, breath of God - Carlisle
City of God, how broad, how far - Richmond
God of mercy, God of grace - Heathlands
Saviour, again to thy dear name we raise - Ellers
Guide me, O thou great Redeemer - Cwm Rhondda
The last one made up for any defects in the others; although there were fewer than 20 of us, we made a very joyful noise indeed, and (possibly more to the point) it made everyone smile.
This morning we sang:
Christ is the world’s light- Christe Sanctorum
Seek ye first the kingdom of God
Just as I am - Saffron Walden
Father God I wonder
During communion:
Bread of heaven - Nicht So traurig ( J S Bach)
The usual tosh, starting with the execrable All are welcome (as if!) and ending with the asinine Make me a channel of your peace.
But at least the latter was mildly enlivened with some slinky jazz progressions in the chorus.
Hail the day that sees him rise, Alleluia! (Llanfair)
Hail thee, festival day! (Salve festa dies)
O Lord most high, eternal King (Gonfalon Royal)
See the Conqueror mounts in triumph (In Babilone)
Choral:
Ruth Watson Henderson: Missa brevis (1976)
Stanford: Coelos ascendit hodie
Byrd: Psallite Domino, qui ascendit
A bit different from our place. The vicar decided to do a Celtic reflective service, with music from the laptop. Very quiet and beautiful, though not my personal taste. Sadly only five people attended from across the five churches, three of us from actually outside the parish boundaries.
Come let us join our cheerful songs (Nativity)
The head that once was crowned with thorns (St Magnus)
Hail thou once despised Jesus (Ebenezer)
I know that my Redeemer lives (Church Triumphant)
Lots of enquiries from the congregation as to why we weren't singing the Eucharist, but our priest is just being too Covid over protective. We are losing choir members because they are feeling fed up.
Our choir has sung as soon as it was legal to do so. Now our church is considering returning to former pre- covid ways, including using the high altar for communion, which will mean congregants walking through the chancel whilst the choir is singing. I have expressed my doubts, as I don't think it is a particularly safe thing to do yet.
We've got:
You've called us together O God by your grace (TO GOD BE THE GLORY)
I am the church (WE ARE THE CHURCH)
My life flows on in endless song (HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING)
Lord of life we come to you (ERISKAY LOVE LILT)
Hail to the Lord's anointed (CRÜGER)
I don't know whether I'm in a particularly grumpy mood but the first hymn is a bit... leaden? Pairing it with TGBTG just makes it clear how much better a poet the original lyricist was. Plus I'm not sure I entirely agree with the lyrics, which look like they were written to celebrate an ecumenical partnership or similar. The second hymn suffers from a similar lack of poetic skill. Way too many words added in to pad out the lines and a weird sort of babbled rhythm to the verses.
Being the fifth Sunday in the month, our early (said) Communion service followed the Book of Common Prayer.
Three hymns:
At The Name Of Jesus CAMBERWELL
God Of Mercy, God Of Grace HEATHLANDS
Christ Triumphant, Ever Reigning GUITING POWER
“Hail the day that sees him rise” (Llanfair).
“We want to see Jesus lifted high”.
“Great is the darkness”.
"Of the Father’s heart begotten” (Corde Natus).
“Lo! he comes with clouds descending” (Helmsley).
“At the name of Jesus” (Camberwell).
The head that once was crowned with thorns (St Magnus)
The Lord ascendeth up on high (Ach Herr, du allerhöchster Gott)
Draw us in the Spirit's tether (Union Seminary)
Christ is the world's true Light (St Joan)
Choral:
Adrian Batten: Short Communion Service
Christopher Tye: Omnes gentes plaudite manibus
I paid one of my occasional visits to our place this morning and we had:
Come Set Your Rule and Reign (Build Your Kingdom Here)
Praise Is Rising
By The Grace of God (I Rest My Soul on Jesus)
Your Grace Is Enough
Open The Eyes Of My Heart, Lord Lord I Need You
The head that once was crowned with thorns (St Magnus)
The Lord ascendeth up on high (Ach Herr, du allerhöchster Gott)
Draw us in the Spirit's tether (Union Seminary)
Christ is the world's true Light (St Joan)
Choral:
Adrian Batten: Short Communion Service
Christopher Tye: Omnes gentes plaudite manibus
ooohh very nice.
I schlepped out to the wilds of Parramatta for Mass yesterday & the choir of St-Pat’s-in-the-West put on a very fine rendition of O clap your hands of Gibbons and the Mathias Missa Brevis. I was late ( damn and blast CityRail) & missed the processional but happily sang along to “ Lord enthroned in Heavenly splendour ( Bryn Calfaria).
... a very fine rendition of O clap your hands of Gibbons ...
“Lord enthroned in Heavenly splendour" ( Bryn Calfaria).
Oooohhh ... St. Magnus, Batten Short and O clap your hands (probably my favourite anthem in the whole repertoire) ...
I'm committing a deadly sin by coveting your music!
I've never sung “Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour" to Bryn Calfaria, but I reckon it would work rather well!
Isn't He going the wrong way? Good tune though, for which David wrote a rather excellent descant.
Our offerings were rather more prosaic, although we did give it a bit of welly in the last hymn:
Hail, thou once despisèd Jesus - Lux Eoi Come, let us join our cheerful songs - Nativity Jerusalem the golden - Ewing O thou, who at thy Eucharist didst pray - Song 1* Love divine, all loves excelling - Blaenwern
* at least we got a bit of Gibbons, even if it wasn't the right bit.
Mass tomorrow starts with "Turning the world upside down" and ends with "Shine Jesus Shine."
I am devastated to not be there.
NB I will also miss the rather lovely Veni Sancte Spiritus by Christopher Walker.
We have a Pentecost All Age Communion with worship band this morning. This is a first. No choir needed.
At 6 pm there will be a Jubilee Service, with choir, mostly traditional hymns, but the vicar has changed the last one to You shall go out with joy, followed by party poppers. The DoM plans to follow that with Rutter’s The Lord bless you and keep you. I am not sure that the Lord will give us peace after that. I will report later.
Our regular first Sunday of the month "Hymns of Praise" service celebrated both Pentecost and the Platinum Jubilee.
National Anthem I'd never realised that this is actually in our hymn book, although it doesn't include the verse about crushing rebellious Scots!
All people that on earth do dwell OLD HUNDREDTH
O thou who camest from above HEREFORD
The Lord's my shepherd CRIMOND
Come down O love divine DOWN AMPNEY
The offerings at St. P's were rather similar to yours, Darda.
Breathe on me, breath of God - Carlisle O thou, who camest from above - Hereford There's a spirit in the air - Lauds Come down, O love divine - Down Ampney God save the Queen (first two verses - no rebellious Scots!)
I think it's in most British hymnals, and possibly Commonwealth ones too. It was in the hymnbooks we used in Canada; in fact I don't think I'd ever sung more than one verse until we moved there, where they often sang two.
Vigil Mass for the reception of a priests body on the eve of the Requiem.
Love divine all loves excelling (not to Blaenwern unfortunately}
The King of love my Shepherd is
My God loves me (to Plaisir d'amour)
Lord Jesus Christ you have come to us. (This always sounds like fairground music when played on the organ.)
How great thou art.
The priest had been CofE in his youth, hence the somewhat Anglican choice of hymns.
We had:
As we are gathered
Come Holy Ghost our hearts inspire (ST COLUMBA, ERIN)
O breath of life (SPIRITUS VITAE)
We sing a love (WOODLANDS)
O for a thousand tongues to sing (DESERT, LYNGHAM, because I'm sorting out the music and I like counter melodies)
Just sang two today as the Community Council asked us to lead a short service in the park as part of their jubilee party. We had:-
O God our help in ages past. At Ann
Lord of the years.
Fortunately while the Queen got a mention we didn't have to endure the English Dirge (I know no Scots or Welsh who want anything to do with the wretched thing).
What we did have wasn't great. Not memorable. The service was meant to be on the Green but was moved back into church on account of pissing rain so that might be why.
This morning was an all-age, all-parish service of Holy Communion ( CW) for Pentecost.
Hymns were accompanied on the piano, and led by the Vicar, but nobody knew most of them.
On the day of Pentecost
O Lord, the clouds are gathering
Spirit of the living God
God’s spirit is in my heart
O God of burning cleansing flame
This evening was a Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving, with choir.
Introit: Cantate Domino - Pitoni
All people that on earth do dwell
Be Thou my vision- Slane
anthem: How goodly are thy tents - Ousley
Guide me O thou great redeemer
You shall go out with joy
The Lord bless you and keep you - Rutter
National Anthem
On the day of Pentecost

Spirit of the living God
God’s spirit is in my heart
O God of burning cleansing flame
I think I probably know 2 of the 5, and one of those (God's Spirit is in my heart) is not in any hymn book I've got and is definitely filed under "obscure" in my head even if I rather like it.

Trained at Moore College?
Definitely. I think they probably worship him. Perhaps he'll go back to them and leave us alone.
It takes a lot to get rid of a troublesome priest as you may be aware ( consider the case of a recently appointed and now departed RC priest not all that far from you).
Henry II certainly found that.

“Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” (Lobe den Herrn).
“Praise you, Lord, for the wonder of your healing” (this has its own tune).
“For the healing of the nations” (Rhuddlan).
“I cannot tell” (Londonderry Air - I pitched a bit too low!)
Better than too high, and really with that tune you have to pick one.
ION it turns out the hymns I chose were not based on the same lectionary readings as our Interim Moderator was using. Whoops.
Hail the day that sees him rise, Alleluia! (Llanfair)
Hail thee, festival day! (Salve festa dies)
O Lord most high, eternal King (Gonfalon Royal)
See the Conqueror mounts in triumph (In Babilone)
