The happiest day of my working life (in retrospect) was the day I became a freelancer after my employer decided not to renew my fixed-term contract. It didn't feel happy at the time, because I had to build up a client base and wasn't sure I would earn enough money to live on. But I never had to go to a pointless meeting again. And I mostly communicated with my clients by email.
