A lovely sunny day, warm but not too hot. I went to Mass where I seem to have volunteered myself to be a steward at a prayer event organised by Churches Together in a couple of weeks. I came home and told my husband about it and I got the rather you than me look.
I'm having a lazy afternoon and evening. My hip has been really playing up lately and it doesn't seem to be getting very much better so I'm hoping not doing much will help. I may be in my seventies but I hate hobbling round like an old lady.
I'm sorry to hear that. My left hip has never been quite the same since I slipped and fell on black ice last winter. I can function perfectly well but it does give me twinges. My wife has recommended some simple balancing exercises which do seem to be helping.
It has been an action-packed couple of days in the Wilds of Wiltshire.
Yesterday we had friends over for the afternoon and an evening meal. This is a couple that Mr Nen used to know in his church youth group and they live in Fairly Nearby Town. We went for a walk, ending up along the towpath of the nearby canal. Here there was much excitement with a boat that had loosed one of its moorings and ended up broadside across the canal, thus hampering the progress of a couple of boats that we had helped through the lock. When we left the crew on one of the boats had boarded said boat and seemed to be doing a good job of mooring it a bit further along the bank.
We then had a very nice evening of conversation over the meal, which seemed to go down well. I explained earlier about the dietary restrictions one of the couple has, so I was quite nervous about serving up anything that might adversely affect her, but she messaged this morning to thank us and all seems well.
This morning we headed to a new (to us) church where the singing was hearty and the sermon excellent (details in Ecclesiantics) and afterwards had coffee and some long conversations with a couple we're just getting to know who live in a nearby village. Coffee and conversation after church is something I've really been missing so it was very lovely and they seemed to appreciate it as well. We didn't get back until 2.30pm.
This evening will be roast chicken and white WINE and the Retirement Sunday Evening Celebration of no work tomorrow.
@Nenya I'm so glad the meal went well. As someone who also has to avoid onions and garlic, thank you for taking your friends' dietary needs seriously even when it's an annoying/more difficult restriction!
We had a baptism at our church yesterday. It’s distresses me that the parents and godparents make vows to bring the child to church but don’t even take the child to the altar at communion..
Either way, there may be Good Reasons for not bringing the child to the altar (presumably for a blessing at Communion time), even though an invitation has been issued (most clergy would do this IME).
We also had a baptism yesterday evening, of a teenager in the youth group.
Usual Monday morning of emails and admin. My meeting was re-arranged so I did some work on a student mental health project instead. So far this afternoon has consisted of doing laundry and tidying.
I don’t like christening services for children of non-churchgoing families - they might as well have a secular naming party. at least they stayed until the end of the service because the service we use involves presenting the child with a candle right at the end. In the past when the child was presented with the candle straight after the baptism, then we’ve had most of the baptismal party leave straight after the baptism occasionally.
We have been getting back to normal. Husband en rouge and Captain Pyjamas went grocery shopping this morning, while I did laundry and tidied the house. This afternoon we went to buy new sports kit for school, which starts back next week.
@la vie en rouge That is positively dull, but I expect you are giving thanks after two months of the wrong kind of excitement.
Eldest grandson is off to Big School in September. He says he’s looking forward to it, and I hope it works out, but I fear he is a bit wet for such a school: it was closed down completely some years ago and reconstituted with a new name, staff and many new buildings, but the catchment area and demographics have not changed.
