    "Evening prayer is surely one of the great inventions of the Church of England." But isn't it the Anglican version of vespers, and as such a modification of the ancient monastic office rather than an invention?

    AIUI, Cranmer's Evening Prayer was a combination of Vespers and Compline. The contemporary version is rather more flexible.

    There are Episcopal churches -- and I assume Anglican -- that hold Compline as a separate office.

    I think, though, that was something introduced in places like St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, which has had choral compline service since the 1950s. As far as official prayer book liturgies go, I think that for American Episcopalians that started—or was recovered, if you prefer—with the 1979 BCP.

    I think the Common Worship daily office is loosely based on the Franciscan office

    Yes, you're right. At one time, we had daily Morning Prayer at Our Place, using the Franciscan Office (with up to 8 or 9 present on occasion - mostly just 3 or 4).
