I wouldn't have thought it brainless! My old friend didn't know, and she's lived in California most of her life.
I in turn have a friend who I'd kind of lost touch with but who resurfaced a few weeks ago. I belatedly remembered she told me she'd moved to Garden Grove, so I checked on her - she's staying with friends here in Long Beach. She said the communication from local officials had been terrible, but got a lot better once the state took over.

Update: I MAY HAVE TWO MORE CLASSES! I don’t know if they’re merely penciled in and subject to being cancelled, but PRAYING THESE STAY, for a total of FOUR! I’d still need to do a GoFundMe but it would be less of a crisis!!
Update: Those two new classes are tentative, because that’s how that college does things (argh) so they may be yanked all the way down to the wire. So they suggest we set up the courses we’ve been tentatively given in a “sandbox,” which I’ll do, but man, I wish they were carved in stone—they start MONDAY. So I’m not sure how much to put in the GoFundMe, the amount if I only get the two classes (yikes) or if I get the four classes (still needed but not catastrophic). And off to the doctor to look at my feet shortly. Prayers/good vibes for everything…
OK, so I just got out of the doctor’s office. He did not see any sign of infection but as a precautionary measure, he is prescribing an oral antibiotic that I don’t know the name of and I will have to take a look. Also a kind of little pad that has some kind of chemical saturated in it to put on both the heel and foot. I asked about getting collagen like I used before on Amazon and he said that I could use some collagen and alternate with that and the little chemical pad. He said that I have “typical diabetic feet” and that what I need are special shoes that I would have to go to the podiatrist to get set up and would probably cost about $250. Checking with my doctor friend to see if all this sounds good.
That IS full-time. But in this area at least, that will barely pay you peanuts. The whole area of instructorship needs massive reform.
Unfortunately, the way it works for adjuncts is, well, not great. And if they give an adjunct too many classes, then it counts as full-time, with benefits and everything, so they don't. (Things have changed a lot since I was in college myself--there are usually more adjuncts than officially full-time professors...) So I have to get some classes from one place, some from another, etc. At the moment, I have (or have the equivalent of, since there can be conjoined courses) 2 classes from a college in Virginia, and 2 from one in Louisiana. Four classes in a non-summer semester is the max for adjuncts in my experience (summer is different), and at the places I've taught it doesn't count as full-time...

Wow! That is US$5K—per a 3 credit course? 😮 That’s amazing, though of course it’s in Canada so I’d kind of expect it to be higher than here. Like, I’m looking at (after deducted taxes) 3837 for 2 3-credit classes at one place and 4513 at another (again, that’s 2 3-credit classes), in USD. (And in Canada, with healthcare! I would have no health insurance at all if I didn’t have Obamacare… and even then things went up a whole lot this year, but that’s a long story involving Congress and deserves to be either in purgatory or in hell…)
When we lived in Newfoundland, David was an adjunct at the theological college, where he taught for three hours a week at (I think) $50 an hour (that was at least ten years ago). That was in addition to his Cathedral salary though!
I can't speak for wages at other institutions. These are the wages for in person or online courses. We are also unionized.
We got an adjunct union at a place I taught at here in Florida but sadly, while the college administrators agreed to the contract they came up with, the board of trustees vetoed it.
At issue was a section of the contract that said adjuncts would be paid $150 if a course was cancelled less than two weeks before its start.

I don’t teach at that place anymore, because they don’t allow adjuncts to teach online anymore, even though they used to. (I got a very high rating on “Rate My Professor,” too!) And things have changed in other ways I don’t care for as well, so I’m better off at the other places I have stuff. Still need to apply to more places, though.
I love my oldest son and my daughter-in-law. They are good, kind, and generous people and a delight to be around. They have arrived for a five day visit. It is now day three. My son who is an outstanding cook has been making all of our meals, my daughter-in-law has been working in my garden. We have been having meaningful conversations, and I am looking forward to them leaving. Laughing. I am 87 live alone and have a couple hour visits from my younger son each week, I have many friends that I see for an hour or two during the week. . I am so looking forward to quiet alone time. I had no idea I would feel this way. I am amused at myself.
I am finding out the appliances we put in the house thirty years ago are giving way. The gas water heater is giving out. We had thought about switching to electric, but we would have to rewire the switchbox again--the line that had been dedicated to a previous electric water heater got rededicated to air conditioning a few years ago, so we will stay with gas for now. This morning I discovered the thermostat in our gas dryer went out within the past couple of days. Someone is coming tomorrow to look at it. If it can't be fixed, we will likely get an electric one.
This is on top of the oven and free standing stove top we put in last year (previous appliances were--you guessed it--30 years old.
Our refrigerators are both still holding up. One is 50 years old, probably not as efficient as new ones, The other is--should I say it--30 years old
I wish I could replace some other things on my person as easily as replacing appliances though.
Got the dryer repaired this morning. Turns out it was a broken drum belt. Just got a call from the plumber. They can do the water heater installation in tomorrow. Then the house will be like new?
I never thought I would say this, but yesterday was just too hot to go swimming. 98F. It would require putting on a suit and walking across the street to the pool. I just could not do it. Today will be more of the same, and thankfully cooler for the weeek-end.

Local restaurant known for its golden arches. Several things involved here. Our local minimum wage just went up. Any company using fossil fuel in its operations has to pay a carbon tax. Then, on top of this the increased cost of ingredients and delivery play a roll.
I have high hopes that our rainy season will be more like normal this summer. We've been in a severe drought for about two years, and the wildlife have been suffering! (And us, too!)

Today (June 28th) was New York City's Pride Parade, followed by Pride Fest, the street fair. Didn't make it to the parade, sadly, but went to the Fest with a friend and had a great time.

I have a question? My new neighbor has his American flag hanging horizontal on his porch with the stars in the upper right hand corner. It should be with the stars on the upper left hand corner. Would you think me a busy body Karen for telling him? He did not just hang it for the 4th of July, but it has been up for several months. It is one of those things that I would want to know if it was me, but do not want to make a big deal out of it, or offend or make him feel bad.
I think you could ASK him ("I've always seen it the other way around. Is there some special reason why...?") and then listen. The reason I suggest this mode is because some people do assign meanings to various positions of the the flag, thought the one I've usually heard propounded is the flag upside-down position.

Although now on rereading, I see that you said the flag is hanging horizontally. Do you mean the stripes are horizontal/side-to-side? Or are they vertical/up-and-down? It should be the latter.
Up and Down. I think what may have happened is he was standing on his porch when he put it over the railing and it was correct to him, but now against the porch is backward to the street where it is viewed. I think he does not see it because he goes in his house by his back door and the flag hangs from his front porch.

Frivolous aside... That's sort of like an old story - was it Richard Feynman? - who asked for a cup of tea without milk. "We haven't got milk" said the waitress. "All right - I'll have tea without cream!"
One time my husband asked me to bring him home a double hamburger without cheese. You could only order a single hamber without cheese. If you wanted a double burger it only came with cheese. ??????? So I bought two singles, no cheese and threw out the second bun.

I’m reminded of the John Belushi SNL sketch about the “cheeburger” restaurant now. (Which seems to have inspired a real (and awesome, though there’s not one near me now, sadly!) restaurant called “Cheeburger Cheeburger”!)
What is everyone eating or not eating these days. I am not eating lettuce, or fresh berries, green onions. If I can cook it and or peel it I am fine. Pineapples and watermelons are my go to fruit. My problem I can not get dehydrated, and I am allergic to the meds you need to cure it, so I am trying to be extra careful. I am in California. We have some cases but not a large number.
I had just bought fresh berries and peaches when we found out about the parasite. I normally just add them to my yogurt in the morning, so didn't want to waste them. I blanched the peaches, took the skins off, chopped them, then added the berries and cooked them for about ten to fifteen minutes. That should kill the nasty critters!!
I was very pleasantly surprised to find the cooked fruit on my yogurt to be every much as tasty as the fresh!
We aren't having lettuce and if I get a watermelon (one of my favorites!) I'll be sure to scrub the rind before cutting into it.
