My understanding, from research and from what I've seen published, is that nobody is going to intervene with this doe until she's dead--at which point I can contact the local eagle sanctuary and they'll take her body for the birds. But I'd prefer to put off that day...
Deer are specifically ruled out as subjects of interest for the MO Dept of Conservation and for agencies reporting to them, EXCEPT as creatures to be hunted, or when they become major nuisances and you want to get rid of them (read: kill them without waiting for deer season and a permit).
We talked to our son, who lives in Washington DC, earlier this afternoon. He reported that he and his girlfriend had gone to see the musical 1776 last night. (It seems to be getting staged a lot now, for the 250th.)
“Oh, that was one of my favorites when I was growing up,” I said. “How’d you like it?”
“It was good, but the seats were really small,” he answered.
“Oh, where was it?!” I asked.
“Ford’s Theater.”
A theater built in the 1800s and a 6’5” son. I bet he did think the seats were small.
At least he wasn’t sitting in the president’s box.
Good, he said. In case you’ve never seen it, it’s a musical about the Second Continental Congress deciding to declare independence. The main characters (not surprisingly) are John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.
It sounds fascinating, both the play and the setting!
It’s very good—won the Tony for best musical in ‘69.
There is a movie version of it, with the original Broadway actors for the three main roles reprising those roles. I’m sure it’s streaming somewhere, and may be on YouTube.
It was very inspiring. Mamdani is an awesome speaker. He started the program, then there were a selection of union presidents, organizers etc., and lastly Bernie Sanders, who is also very good.
We are having torrential rains here today. Well, at least torrential for this part of the year in this area. Looking outside I am seeing sheets of rain coming down. They have issued areal flood watches today.
Meanwhile, Florida is burning and icebergs are slamming into Michigan houses.
Well, our son officially has his master’s degree, specifically a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. We had a beautiful day for commencement. And the celebration will continue this weekend, when a local independent bookstore will host a reading by him and his cohort of fellow grads. We’re looking forward to that because he rarely lets us read anything he’s written.
In a year, it’ll be his sister who’ll finish her master’s degree (social work), and then maybe we won’t have any kids in school for the first time since 2003.
Congratulations to your son @Nick Tamen . Tomorrow will be future son in law's graduation. I think the ceremony is around noon. Then his family and our family is to go to a local restaurant for dinner. After that, everyone is coming to our place for dessert. Spent all day today preparing for it. Considering the crowd and the limits I have with mobility, I just might miss the ceremony but go to dinner.
I remembered Rossweisse fondly last night. We had supper with son and girlfriend at a fantastic restaurant with creative takes on Southern food. I had the shrimp and grits. (And I thought of @Foaming Draught, too, since he recently asked advice about that dish.) I remember how Rossweisse, with her Charleston roots, was scornful of how chefs had taken ordinary hominy and shrimp (the traditional Low Country name for shrimp and grits) and fancified it beyond recognition. And here I was eating shrimp and grits made with crab étouffée and smoked paprika oil. I suspect she would have approved, though, because it was incredibly good.
But not as good as the mint julep ice cream I had for dessert. That was just mind-blowing.
@Gramps49, how did dessert at your house go yesterday?

It went well. The amazing thing is, when I got on the scale this morning, I did not gain any weight!
I remember grits. Liked them with butter. Neighbors were Creole. They always had them with shrimp.

I'm going to make myself stop doing grading soon tonight (1:40 am here), then shower, make dinner, and go to bed at a better hour than I have been, God willing.
I tried to get it all done in an all nighter last night and stopped at 6 AM because I was getting nauseated from exhaustion. Picking up now and it will be late, but I am apparently not in trouble thank God. I will try to get both that and the other colleges’ stuff in by the end of the night, but we will see what I can do. I have had to accept that I cannot push myself the way I was able to years ago…
This evening I got a text from an old friend from high school whom I haven't seen in years, offering me a place to stay if I needed to evacuate. We're about 10 miles west of the plant that's getting ready to blow, but it was kind of her to reach out.

I was wondering if it was in your neck of the woods, but didn't like to display my geographical brainlessness by asking!

Here’s a clip of the opening song.
The Artemis 2 astronauts are now closer to the moon than to Earth!

Talk about weather weirding.

Enjoy whatever of the day you participate in tomorrow, and congratulations to your son-in-law-to-be!
So much grading to do at the end of the semester for 8 classes at 3 different colleges…
Have some good sushi.

And an extra prayer for Rossweisse. 🕯
Glad it went well.
May she continue to rest in peace.
I am, absolutely!
