I loved it, bonkers though it was. So many unanswered questions though. And was that villain brought back in that way just so they could make a joke that the whole British end of the internet has been making for weeks?
I can't rule that out. I confess that I did laugh out loud at it.
  • Cheery daughter just alerted me to the fact that Netflix has a non-animated version of Cells at Work, showing in Oz currently. Cheery son and I have loved the animated versions, so think we will give this a go. There is also Cells at work black, which I might watch by myself, as perhaps a bit too close to home for Cheery son.

    Cool!!
  • I watched the "human done" version yesterday, it was great, but it actually turned out that it was a film not a series, and it appears I mixed up what Cheery daughter was telling me. Interestingly the bit that made me tear up was different to the part that impacted her, so that was interesting.

If anyone else watches it, I'd be keen to know what you think

Last night, Mrs. Gramps and I started watching "The Rise and Fall of the Vikings" on the National Geographic channel. I believe it must have been a British production based on the accents of the commentators. We watched to the discovery of how they traded for glass beads from possibly India but ended up recording the rest of the series. Learned quite a bit, looking forward to seeing the rest of it.

I have also heard "Walking with Dinosaurs" is a great series. Next on our watch list.

Last night, I watched Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny a part of the American Masters program through PBS. It talked about how Ms Arendt, as a young Jewish correspondent was tasked with documenting how the Nazi regime started to propagandize against the Jewish community in Germany. She eventually escaped to Paris and then Marseille where she booked passage to the United States. She wrote a book, The Origins of Tyranny, on what she learned. Of note, she attended the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem and wrote for The New Yorker about how the Nazis actually used Jewish Community leaders to determine who would go to the death camps. Many Jews turned against her because of this observation. She lived on into the Vietnam War era and pointed out how the Johnson and Nixon administrations were using propaganda much like the Nazis.

One thing she liked about the United States was the consent of the people to the ideals of the Constitution.

I cannot help but wonder what she would think of the Trump administration.

There’s a new one as well I need to see. We loved the whole series from the early 2000s—Walking with Dinosaurs, with Creatures, with Sea Monsters—there were some silly things in the Early Man one (suggesting earlier hominids didn’t have the same emotional levels that dogs or cats, much less other primates, have, struck me as very odd). But overall they were great.

I often watch an episode of Law and Order in the late afternoon, and for months its featured Sam Waterston, an excellent actor. But today I flicked it on and lo, here was the radiant Vincent D'Onofrio, a mesmerising actor. So maybe we have a few months of the radiant one. He is well weird.

Enjoying Walking with Dinosaurs. Also watching Dept Q

Sorry for the double post, the edit time closed before I remembered to add good thing Q comes with English subtitles on Netflix. Hard to follow the Scottish accent.

My initial take on Dept Q was: "what would happen if Dr House was English and solving crimes in Edinburgh". I enjoyed the series but the geography was certainly... interesting. It's like they bumped Arran or maybe Bute to the other side of the country. It also flummoxed me that the subtitles said Mhor (i.e. Vor) but everyone pronounced the island name as Mòr. Either way it just means "big" which is a strange name for an island.
  • Gramps49Gramps49 Shipmate
Dept Q had us at the edge of our seats. Hope they continue the series. For those of you who have not seen it: a great thriller. Five of Five for sure.

The new Ultraman series, Ultraman Omega, just started on YouTube (for free)! I like it so far.

Now watching UnTamed. Much like Dept Q but setting is in Yosemite National Park. A young woman has fallen off of El Capitan, a special investigator sets out to find out what happened. Investigator has issues of his own. On Netflix. Six episodes.

Am watching South Park. It is on Paramount+ for now. It provides a vicious satire on the Trump administration. This week it took on Kristi Noem and the recruitment or new ICE members. Noem's face kept falling off as a dig at her using Botox.

I am amazed it is in its 29th season. In the past I ignored it. Take a look at it, if you can.

South Park is billed as equal opportunity satire but it's mostly a platform for Parker & Stone's libertarian dude bro views. The transphobia is particularly egregious.

I just started streaming Wednesday, after seeing two (later) episodes with my cousins while on vacation. It's a lot of fun, and the character of Wednesday is brilliant.

I was totally distracted by how beautiful Gwendoline Christie is when I watched that.
  • I have tried to interest Cheery son in Wednesday as it's just dropped here. We will get to it eventually, but he'd like all episodes to be up before starting. I might have a sneak peak without him!

I'm always late to the party, I'm currently enjoying Kim's convenience. I am only partway through season one and am enjoying it so far.

We’ve just started it as well, and I’m loving it.

  • Has anyone seen Alien: Earth yet?
  • I’m going to finally give Alien: Earth a shot.

    Pondering checking out Stranger Things.
  • Yesterday Cheery son and I finally began Wednesday. First the last episode of season one to refresh our memories, then onto the new season (just one episode). Well, that was the plan. However, we binged the whole thing and can't wait for the rest of the episodes to drop in a week's time! I'd hoped Thursday Murder Club might have begun today, but it wasn't there when I logged in.

By chance I lucked upon a short documentary on prison inmates making quilts for foster children, called The Quilters . It was a total delight and I saw some comments online expressing wishes that it had been a series rather than a one off, but I can imagine that would have been difficult to record and that even a 30 minute documentary must have taken weeks to record all the footage.

What service is Wednesday on @Cheery Gardener?

I met the actress Emma Myers when they were filming in our village. 🙂

    Netflix.

(I’m not @Cheery Gardener, obviously, but it’s late night in her part of the world by now, so I hope she doesn’t mind me jumping in.)

  • I'm glad you jumped in @Nick Tamen as I've only just seen @Boogie's query. How wonderful that you got to meet Emma Myers, I love her in the role of Wednesday's friend. Wonderful that our friends can be completely different to us in many ways, but the relationship is genuine.

This afternoon I made Cheery son watch Thursday murder club, a first watch for him and a second one for me! I think I enjoyed it more today than I did last night. It took me a minute to reconnect with the characters and get used to the actors playing them. A satisfying cozy watch.

    Thank you.

I know two people who have watched Thursday Murder Club twice!

We enjoyed it. We don’t have Netflix but it was showing in the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. The audience on Bank Holiday Mondsy at 3pm was mostly of an age to live in Coopers Chase, although probably not of the right budget (those rooms were huge!). The appreciative “ooohs” from the audience every time a slice of Joyce’s cake hit a plate just added to the atmosphere!
  • Glad to hear you enjoyed it @Gill H. Sounds like you sat amongst a whole group of baking fans, those cakes did look pretty good and I imagine they were even better on a large screen.

Last night I sat with the kids and husband and we watched the new Superman film It was very enjoyable and the special effects were great. I think I enjoyed it mostly as a family activity, as we don't do many of those now that the kids are adults.
  • I remembered after my last post that I discovered an enjoyable series on Netflix. It's called the Green Glove Gang and is in Polish with subtitles. 3 female burglars hide out in a nursing home, but discover there are bad people there and bad things happening that reach beyond the nursing home. The women cannot help but become involved and in doing so engage many of the residents to assist them.

It has amusing moments and pathos. I have felt for both the police working hard to locate them, and the women as they evade capture. I am now onto Season two and enjoying it very much.

It is not as cozy as Thursday Murder Club, but it's very engaging and I love the way that slowly but surely the management lose control of the place.
  • The new episodes of Wednesday drop tomorrow (on a Wednesday, natch) and I can't wait!
  • Yesterday a colleague recommended 'The Perfect Couple' on Netflix, a murder mystery/thriller drama series with Nicole Kidman. Binge watched first two episodes last night and were it not already nearly midnight by the end I'd happily have devoured more....will probably do so tonight
  • Again, I am late to the party and am enjoying Grace and Frankie on Netflix. It's a bit sweary in spots, but so funny.

Is anyone else watching Only Murders In the Building? I am loving it so far!
  • Watching Missing You on Netflix. Why is it you Brits can concoct such good thrillers?
  • Gramps49 wrote: »

Well the TV series is indeed British but the book it's based on is American
    (author Harlan Coben)

It’s a joy. The on-screen rapport between the central three is so lovely.
  • I agree, @Gill H. I am also enjoying that there is a podcast accompanying this season - very fitting!

Anyone else struggling to work out what the hell is going on in Alien: Earth? I find a lot of these modern scifi series hard to follow - I similarly gave up on The Expanse.

Would help if they didn't mumble and whisper the dialogue /old man ranting
  • I thought the Expanse was fine, though for other reasons I never completed the final season -- I think Alien: Earth is a little bit of a mess though. The wait for the next season of Foundation will be a long one -- doubly so as it looks like it might be the last, and they are almost bound to screw it up.

I came to see if anyone had any opinions on the 'Thursday Murder Club' adaption and see a few people on board and friends of shipmates liked it. My mum loved the books, but when I suggested watching it with my parents she said she already watched some, but felt the characters and the actors portraying them were all wrong.

I am pet sitting for them soon so might watch it then. I tend to only subscribe to streaming services short term for particular movies or shows and catch up on Netflix when I pet sit.

We ended up watching a 90s Aussie movie we hadn't seen, 'Thank God he met Lizzie' with Cate Blanchett, Francis O'Connor and Richard Roxburgh. A bit nostalgic watching a film from before mobile phones became common place and interesting to watch a romance without a Hollywood trajectory or predictable ending

I thought it was ok (apart from the plot changes which have upset nearly everyone) and the characters were fine, even before the film was made I thought Ben Kingsley would be perfect for Ibrahim, and both the female leads were exactly right. I thought Pierce Brosnan was all wrong for Ron, I imagined him like Ray Winstone! What did annoy me was the setting, in the books Coopers Chase is more like a small luxury estate with everyone in their own bungalow, rather than the stately home they used.

  • I watched it and really, I wouldn’t bother. Apart from what @Sparrow says, there was a complete lack of tension. No one really cared who dunnit, (and anyway, if you have read the book you know). Really, there is more drama in an episode of Midsommer Murders, though this film resembled the atmosphere of those programmes.
  • Gramps49Gramps49 Shipmate
Been watching The House of Guiness on Netflix. As it says at the beginning of each episode, fiction based on true stories.
  • @Mili, even though I enjoyed the TMC film, it was not like the book and I did have some frustration with that. I imagined Cooper's Chase to have lots of comfortable small townhouses, but nothing like a stately home.

I missed the Chris and Patrice storyline and wanted more Bogdan!

I agree with @Sparrow, that I thought the Ron played by Pierce Brosnan, was nothing like I'd imagined him. I guess in my mind he was like Danny Dyer but old. I thought Ibrahim and Stephen were as I imagined them, but not the other cast members.

As an afternoon's fun watching it was good, but I would have preferred more of the book and more suspense.
