Yes, when we lived in West Africa (with no air conditioning and intermittent electricity) 80F + 100% humidity was much worse than 95F + 30%.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I found the humidity to be a killer when I lived in Canada too; thank heavens for air-con!
  • Thankfully dry, and you are right I grew up in damp and sticky. I do know I can be thankful that I do not live where the heat is worse and I have shelter. I have also lived in the high desert where hubby said, oh it is dry heat you won't mind it. I minded.
  • I suppose we all ought to be thankful we don't live in Delhi, where the temperature the other day was 49.9C...

A third of the church choir has it.
That sounds alarming but then it occurs to me to ask - how big is the choir?
  • I would guess 25. the director unknowingly had it and the rehearsal room is not all that big. A lot of people have allergies from pollen this time of year so sore throat and runny noses are common.

    The Royal Bank of Scotland.

The NE Man has an account which is in our joint names, but is under his sole control - he opened it for paying for stuff when he was abroad on conferences. I take zero interest in this account. I can't access it, nor do I want to. I can't remember why it's in joint names, maybe something to do with me being in the UK while he's abroad? There was a bank snafu about 25 years ago when he was stranded with no money in America and I think it dates from then.

Today I contacted the bank to say I couldn't access my business account, in my sole name, and they said they'd linked it to the joint account. I can only get into my own account via the joint account card reader which I could probably find if I rummaged around the NE Man's desk drawers, but which would then presumably require a card which is in my husband's wallet, which will be somewhere about his person at work.

    WTF???
  • Ooh bastards.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
Time to complain. By what authority could they do this?
  • North East QuineNorth East Quine Purgatory Host
I don't know. In fairness, they don't know that we don't use that joint account jointly, and that I don't have access to it, but I still don't see why a joint account would be linked to an individual business account.

The person at the bank asked if it was impacting on my "patients" so I had to say I'm not a medical doctor. But the business account is very clearly non-medical. None of it made sense.

I'd have been tempted to reply, "It certainly is. I'm completely out of patience."
  • North East QuineNorth East Quine Purgatory Host
My husband can't see my business account when he logs in. We speculate that if I logged in, I'd be able to see both the joint account and my business account.

Of course, the bank don't know that I've never used the joint account and can't access it online (and thus can't currently access my business account). I'm going to have to trawl through paperwork to see if there has ever been a letter to me with a password or something giving me online access to the joint account. Although I think if there was, I probably shredded it.

The person I spoke to trying to sort it out wasn't a native English speaker and may have been in a call centre somewhere furth of Scotland. I think I'm going to have to visit the bank in person. I'm away at the start of the week, so it'll have to wait.
  • I think I'm going to have to visit the bank in person.
I hope you have more success in branch than I did the other week, when I ended up in a cubical, in the branch, using their phone to speak to someone in their customer service call centre to make a transfer from my savings a/c to my current a/c.
The whole experience was recounted in full in TICTH. It still makes me feel hellish!

  • SarasaSarasa All Saints Host
I think it depends on the bank. My bank has always been so helpful, but I had a torrid time trying to sort something out with another bank in town. The experience made me thankful I didn't bank there. The bank has since closed and I dread to think of how all the customers in front of me, who were struggling with a new app, are getting on.
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
One of my accounts, which I only keep for its savings account, wanted me to use its app, but I kept failing its facial recognition tests! In the end I gave up and went back to the website. I refuse to use app-only banking.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
I hate it when my banking app asks for facial recognition. It's not helped by the fact that I think it may have been my own fault for adding it at some point when I thought it was necessary, but now I'm not sure that it actually was.

It's very handy being able to use my mobile to transfer money or pay for online purchases and whatnot, but it can get very stressful for a daft old technopeasant like me! :flushed:
  • PuzzlerPuzzler Shipmate
Singers who turn up to sing Evensong who not only have not attended any rehearsal except the one an hour before the service, have not familiarised themselves sufficiently with the music and who don’t know their way around the service and therefore constantly faff about between each item.
The Introit was one our core choir know well but hardly anyone else did and mucked it up right royally. (Tallis If ye love me). Our priest was so discombobulated that she sang O Lord Save the Queen instead of King, for once.

What a shame your "part-timers" cocked up If ye love me - it's such a wee gem, and glorious when done nicely!
  • @ChastMastr , Oh what a week you are having. As a fellow neuropathy victim, I understand. I am so sorry, but glad to hear of the good news of an added class.

Oh I’m so sorry I just saw this. Thank you!

Quite a bit of understatement in that.

  • I'm having a rough time now after arguing with a callous Trump fan on FB about, at first, how I think that if Trump had not been president during Covid (and our evil governor here in Florida too), because of his mishandling of it, my dead partner of 17 years (QuakerCub) might still be alive.

This guy kept adding "laugh" emojis to everything I said. Every detail of what it was like. Even how I sometimes wish I'd died too.

My God, what is wrong with people? And I know Trump fans who aren't like that. I'm just... I have no words here. It's like all he cared about was the Trump aspect (and kept changing my words in the process, too). He just kept laughing at it. I went into more detail and he just kept laughing. He ended by calling me a loser and stuff.

What is wrong with people?? Sin, I know, but Jesus.
  • Please, please--don't expose yourself to such toxic crap. Seriously, you don't know who's behind that identity, and whether (as seems likely) they are intentionally trying to do serious harm. How do you know it's an American? Could easily be a Russian troll, or any other kind of rando from anywhere. Just stay away for your own sake and everybody's.

  • Agreed and Amen.

I'm praying for you @ChastMastr and am so sorry. Like others have said, please don't lay yourself open to this sort of stuff. (I came off social media a long time ago and am much better for it.)

Gardner cut pipe to my air conditioner two days ago, letting the coolant leak out. It can not be repaired until Friday to the tune of $500.00 US dollars, and it will be 105 F today. The mobile home park where I live has a large water leak, so they have had to turn off the water. I am trying to save the patio plants by putting the pots as much in the shade as possible and putting ice cubs on them. ( I need to save bottled water for drinking, as I do not know how long we will be without water). This will be a 4th to remember. No cooking with water or dishwashing, so I will heat up one of my made-ahead frozen dinners; thankfully, I make them because cooking for one is a chore, so I freeze meals. Today I am glad I do.

Crikey, GI - what a pain! Hope it gets sorted soon.
  • Oh wow, I am so sorry! Please stay safe...
  • Happy dance! The water is back on, and although it is 98F outside, it is only 83F in the house. I had new double-pane windows put in last year, spending my children's inheritance. They have proven this week to be an excellent investment. Tomorrow, by noon, all will be well.

They were definitely not a FB friend. Over the last few days, I did also “break up” with a few “surprise! I’m voting for Trump” people who were FB friends (and in those cases I looked back over their feed and found that this wasn’t a new shift in their attitudes—in one case, it was kind of odd because the last straw for me regarding one person was their posts about their love for DeSantis here in Florida—maybe because it’s so literally close to home). In all of those cases, it wasn’t just that they were going to vote for him, but the reasoning they expressed, or other nasty things they’d posted that I’d never seen until I looked. I’ve been wanting/trying to figure out how to build bridges with political opponents, but… in these cases, it just wasn’t going to happen. (And none of them were people I’ve met in person. There’s one local person who I went to high school with, but we didn’t debate it. And she and her husband are moving away soonish…)

FB is a snare and a delusion, not to mention an Engine of Satan. Avoid it entirely.

The same applies to Xwitter, TakTuk, WhatsUpp, or whatever they're called. Rely on letters, emails, phone calls, and (if your thumbs can manage it) texts.

At the moment--I'm hoping to work on this (and my priest has suggested after my foot heals and I get help with the apartment, he/the church could help with getting more of an in-person friends network)--Facebook (along with the Ship again) is my primary way of communicating with the outside world. I speak with one friend daily, sometimes a few times--I'm in Florida, he's in Illinois--I text a bunch of people, largely about what I'm eating and when--another friend mainly communicates via texting or FB messenger and I see him for 15 minutes, maybe 30, per week... another friend and I text a bit and he visits about once a month from a county north of here... um... more texting with a couple of friends in Tampa... er...

I don't have many in-person friends... I did post a desperate plea for help on Facebook (due to my burned foot injury, I'm really limited, I leave the apartment twice a week for wound care and that's it, can't go into stores or restaurants with this foot) and some bears helped with the apartment and getting groceries, God bless them, and I hope we can hang out sometime. Before the injury I was trying to get out to events at bars and such to meet more people. Made it to church once a week on Wednesdays (I suck at getting up early at all) and sometimes would stay for the "supper, song, and prayer" afterward, but haven't gotten very close to the people there yet.

So at the moment, if I left FB entirely, I'd be more isolated than I can begin to imagine right now. And there are nice groups I'm in there. It's also the main way several local clubs (bear and some leather) communicate, both in group chat and letting people know about upcoming events.

I just need to avoid the trolls. And I do want to make more in-person connections with people. The foot healing will help...

Why would I use my thumbs for texts? I know people seem to but I have never done so.
  • @ChastMastr - thanks for explaining so clearly how important FB is to you. You do indeed need to avoid the trolls, though I appreciate this can be difficult...

As to thumbs, it was merely a whimsical reference to the fact that IME most people use their thumbs to text. I wasn't saying that you need to follow suit!

I can truthfully say I've never used my thumbs to text, but then I'm a typist, and we only use them for the space bar ...

I have used my thumbs to text - on the phones I had before I had a smartphone.

I came to CTH my own stupidity for forgetting I really do need to stick to my own self-imposed strategies for coping on shopping trips involving more than two shops and when one of those involved clothes shopping which is my least favourite kind of shopping ever.

Yep, I foolishly forgot my music and the earphones which have the volume set so I can hear what's going on around me, carry out the necessary exchange of words at the till, which can drown out enough of in-store music and, most importantly, muffle those who insist on calling me "darling", "sweetheart", and "lovely" in the brief exchange of two sentences, Honestly, if you don't know me, don't do it!

Japes, I'm fortunate in that I can just turn my hearing aids off, but in some situations I'm not quite deaf enough.

I know it's common with to text with thumbs, but I've never understood it. I think my fingers are faster moving than my thumbs, and definitely more flexible.

That sounds as though if there isn't a law against it, there certainly ought to be. Trades Descriptions Act, anyone?
  • Urk @KarlLB that is really off!
  • I am going to consign to heck a certain organisation, who are having problems with me resigning my membership and keep asking for an amount already paid which was extra to what I needed to pay. I resigned on 1st April, mea culpa, its officially a donation and I am not renewing my membership and have now written twice to tell them.

Ah. The last bit of the computer dramas... the printer side of of it all. Despite reinstalling and updating everything it's being a complete and utter pest. Yesterday was spent re-jigging various document templates margins so they printed how I wanted them to look, not how the printer thought they ought to look.

    Two black cockerells.

May I consign to Hell all domestic equipment (like a TV or radio receiver) that ought to have good honest buttons and knobs, but instead is controlled by an 'App' on an android type thingy that all of a sudden goes belly up.

I have had to employ a nice Christian fellow to fix me up with another thingy ..... at a cost.

And now my BBC I-player app will, I am told, stop being supported (or working) on August. 22.
