Gambit -where have the years gone?

On this date 20 years ago we received the very sad news that our shipmate Gambit (James Rawlings) had died at the tragically young age of 27. I really can’t believe it’s been that long.

Known as the “king of the shipmeets” he had become a RL friend of many of us and I remember many a drunken evening together putting the world to rights.

Goodness, I can’t believe it’s 20 years. It looks like I didn’t start attending the Gambit shipmeets until later, which quite surprises me.

And what a roll-call of old crew members that thread is. And the boards themselves.

Oh, It makes me feel quite sad. Tears, idle tears! ‘So sad, so strange, the days that are no more.’

I went to one Gambit shipmeet or at least intended to. I never met him but reading through that thread and seeing all the names of people that used to post when I first came here, some of whom I have met made me both sad and grateful that this community is still here.

I didn't know him either; I joined the Ship some time in 2005, and don't think I had much interaction with him. I hadn't realised he was so young when he died - what a tragic thing to happen.

Prayers ascending for his soul, and for his family and all who knew and loved him.
