Winter Wonderland?

Just thought I would get this started.

Up till last week we still had flowers blooming in our yard. Turned cold Thanksgiving morning.
This morning woke up to just three inches of snow. Other parts had much more. This winter will find me quite limited in what I will be doing--at least until the end of January, I think.

I am hating it already.

Hope others have better winter plans.

  • Going down to mid-40s at night, up to low 70s when the fog burns off. Still a lot of fall color to be seen in the trees and in the fields. I am a big winter fan, but I no longer need to deal with snow.

    Just rain here.
  • -10°C forecast for tonight, so the car's block heater is plugged in and the timer set for 06:00 so we can be away at 08:00. Plenty of snow lying, but the ploughs have done a good job after the heavy falls of the last few days. This amount is not usual for end November/early December here (south west Ontario).

Mist here this morning, which was quite lovely among the trees.
  • A fine Win Terse Day here, with bright Sun-Shine...

Arkland does occasionally get Sn*w, but recent mild winters have kept it to a minimum - last year, I think we just had a sprinkling of icing-sugar, once, which melted within a few hours.

This suits me fine. The Sn*w looks wonderful when it's fresh, or when it's gently and silently falling, but it does mean that I can't even get out on deck safely, let alone on land. Crutches and Sn*w (or Ice) don't mix well!

    There is that!

On the other hand, every mouse in the greater metro area is invading the nearest house, looking for warmth. We had one doing high jumps in the bathroom last night, trying to escape the bathtub. I decided to let Mr. Lamb deal with it, but it was gone by the time he checked--so apparently it has a bright Olympic future. (also remarkably fat, which says something about our housekeeping)
  • I picked & ate a couple of outdoor cherry tomatoes at the weekend and a couple more are about half ripe. This after several frosts, and some wild and stormy days recently.

I should have pulled the plants up weeks ago, but they still had tiny fruit on them, too small to pick for ripening indoors.

I sometimes wonder, if one had mice, could one gradually humanely trap them and put them in a Habitrail or the like, and just keep them as pets?

@ChastMastr , you are reminding me of the scene in C S Lewis That Hideous Strength, where Ransome blows the little whistle after dinner and mice come in and clean the crumbs.
  • The writer Dodie Smith lived in a cottage that must have been getting quite run down and in her final illness she used to feed the rats on her bed.
  • It's that wonderful time of year where the Spanish go around in their coats, boots, scarves and gloves and tourists go out in tee shirts, shorts, sandals and down vests.

There is snow on the highest mountain tops behind town but still a balmy seventeen in the sun down on the beachfront.

Ski season officially opened last weekend an hour away from us in the sierra Nevada. My skiing days are over (knee is crap) but it looks wonderful.

Supposed to drop into the minus twenties this evening.

I love frosty, sunny winter days.

I also really dislike the shortness of the days and the dark mornings/evenings.

I do experience a bit of seasonal affective disorder every winter. Being in a helping profession, I realize the importance of self-care before I can provide care for students.
