StrAIned Hymn

The following hymn appeared in the church hymn sheets today

Thy Word, O Lord, in truth abides
A light to guide our way
In sacred page, Thy voice resides
To lead us day by day

Thy Word, O Lord, a steadfast guide,
Reveals Thy boundless love;
It calls us to Thy Son's own side,
To find our home above.

It is by that prolific writer Anonymous though the title of the thread should give you some clue to their identity. I went to the evening mass which is said so NO HYMNS (phew on this occassion), so no idea how singable but although in common meter I think the stresses are not good. I thought that this attempt by anonymous might get some comment here.

It would fit "Dundee" OK (without the long notes) or "Kilmarnock".

    Agree with @Baptist Trainfan

I think an alternative would be "Tallis ordinal" if you are RC, otherwise the two already mentioned by BT would be pretty widely known ime particularly "Dundee". I have often played the latter if a tune in that metre has been needed.

    It fits "Crimond."

It actually works quite nicely with Aurelia.
  • Surely not? Aurelia is 7.6.7.6.D not 8.6.8.6.
  • @Nenya:
Yes, it fits nicely with Crimond. A good choice.

    @betjemaniac:
Nothing works quite nicely with Aurelia.

    (I'll get me coat).

Interesting, have none of you picked that it is composed using AI?

That might explain why it is doggerel. Are we sure Hallmark haven't copyrighted it?

A far better choice, IMHO, would be this, sung to Mendip - you can find it in the NEH. Sure, some of it is rather twee but the sentiments are good.

Well I’m happily singing it here, and it doesn’t take much battering

I’d assumed the opposite, everyone had, and that everyone had gone straight past it to ‘what can you do with it?’

Yes, of course - from the thread title and from the excruciatingly poor quality of the lyrics, which I previously refrained from commenting on.

Agreed - it seemed obvious enough.

May I be forgiven by Māna-Yood-Susha̅i̅, or whatever other gods there be, but this is just the sort of Toshly Doggerel which FatherInCharge picks up during his holidays, and which he delights in inflicting on the ever-diminishing congregation at Our Place...

Maybe I am still too Nonconformist but I have RW Dale's opinion
“Let me write the hymns and music of the church, and I care very little who writes its theology.” going through my head.

What was there to pick up? You told us in the title and the OP that it was written by AI. Like @betjemaniac, I assumed everyone was taking that as given and going on to other things.

Surely not? Aurelia is 7.6.7.6.D not 8.6.8.6.

I really can’t figure out how you’re doing that.

Like @Baptist Trainfan, I started reading it and within one line was hearing it to DUNDEE.

  • The words of this hymn make me think that a lot of hymnodists had access to AI 150 years ago.

Although the reality is probably the other way round: AI had access to a lot of hymnodists from 150 years ago.
  • It goes to Isaac Williams' Abridge (Be thou my guardian and my guide ) as well - I wonder if that tune is being confused with Aurelia?

Hehe...and in rather more recent times, too.

Here in the USA, it could be paired with the Gilligan's Island theme song. or "The Yellow Rose of Texas." Or, sort of, "House of the Rising Sun."

I was thinking that too, though it fits with Lutheran theology.
  • It's not the theology that's at fault...it's the dreadfully wooden way in which it's expressed.

At least, that's how I read this thread.

    Same here.

Is it firmly established that it was created by AI?

Well the friend who puts the service sheets together claims it is by AI and he should know and normally does not tell lies just to shock people.

@Bishops Finger Nothing "fits nicely" with Crimond - its a contradiction in terms.

What's wrong with Crimond? - there are surely worse.

Which brings me to the alleged AI hymn - it's doggerel, but no worse than some deliberately penned doggerel I've been asked to sing.

Flexibly, but not without precedent - I accept Aurelia should be 7676, but, if you know your musical theatre or WW1 history you might remember ‘The Ragtime Infantry’ adapts it to 7886.

From there 8686 really isn’t a stretch if you’ve already got The Ragtime Inf in your head!

I agree. Blame student holidays working as relief organist at a crematorium for giving me an aversion to both Crimond and Eventide.
