Working towards a tidy house

The 'books' thread got me thinking ... I dislike tidying but I love a tidy house. I find tidiness calming. When we moved here we got rid of two thirds of all our stuff and furniture - so we don't have any clutter or things we don't need. It's a very small house. But, even so, it's never really tidy. Any ideas, thoughts or tips?
