In an attempt to prove the stereotypical views of Scottish weather correct, yesterday Scotland recorded both the highest temperature in the UK (25.5C in both Aviemore and Kinlochewe) and the lowest temperature in the UK (-0.2C overnight in Altnaharra).

    Covering all the bases!

It has been unseasonably glorious here the last few days, but it can't last ...

Stranraer is a lovely town to visit on a nice day,but for me my favourite part of Scotland is the road from Inveraray down to Lochgilphead and then down to Tarbert and over to West Loch Tarbert (Ferry to Islay ?). Continue down the Atlantic coast road where again you can take a ferry over to Gigha and then on down to Campbeltown which is at the end of the world ( and you can see Ireland).
You can return on the other side of the Kintyre peninsula with wonderful views over to Arran and even,if you wish take the ferry from Clunaig over to Arran.

My wife's aunt, uncle and cousin used to live in Campbeltown, so we've made that trip a couple of times, the first around Hogmanay with snow on the Rest and be Thankful Pass, and the second in summer when we also took advantage of the return via Arran. A beautiful part of the world.
  • We went to the Enchanted Forest at Pitlochry tonight. We we less than half way round when the site was evacuated, and we spent an hour queueing for a bus to take us away. All credit to the stewards, who managed to clear the site of what must have been thousands of people and form us into an orderly queue, while saying, brightly, "well, at least it's not raining heavily, just light drizzle" and similar upbeat comments.
  • Please, what is The Enchanted Forest, and why did it have to be evacuated?
  • The Enchanted Forest is a sound and light show in a forest. It's hugely popular. There's a small loch in the middle and they have special effects with jets of water, sound and light. There are also places to buy hot drinks, roast marshmallows over a fire, etc.

You need to buy tickets well in advance. Buses take people from Pitlochry, it's all very organised.

We were told it was being evacuated because someone had been taken seriously ill, but I don't understand why that would necessitate evacuating a couple of thousand people, all of whom had to be taken away by bus.
  • Thanks @North East Quine - it sounds great (apart from the incident, whatever it was...).

I went to one of those in the grounds of a local stately home a couple of years ago, and it was excellent (if rather expensive).

Hope the person who took ill at yours is going to be OK, NEQ.
  • My cousin’s daughter works at the Enchanted Forest, some years. Maybe she was one of your stewards!

Tesco have got into a stooshie. Yesterday was the last Sunday when their Stornoway store remained closed, next Sunday it will be open. Quite a few people on Lewis do not seem to be happy about it, even more so when they organised community meetings and the chair for the Tesco representative remained empty.

The question will be answered by seeing how many folk actually go to shop there, and/or whether staff are willing for Sunday working. The community meetings sound like a PR disaster for Tesco and give the impression of high-handed couldn't-care-less-what-you-think.
  • One would suppose that Tesco have done their homework, and come to the conclusion that people will visit the store on a Sunday.

Presumably, they've also established which members of staff are willing to work on the Sabbath?

(I note @Alan Cresswell 's point that Sunday observance is important to many people on Lewis, but are there any shops which open on that day, whether in Stornoway, or elsewhere?).

Presumably that's the correct impression. Tesco doesn't care what you think, so long as you turn up and buy its groceries.

It's presumably hoping that it will gain more Sunday business than it will lose offended customers to the Co-op.

Wishing everyone a happy St Andrew's Day; as the haggis season has now officially begun, I'm having haggis bon-bons with WHISKY sauce for supper.

Happy St. Andrew’s day, y’all! The saltire is flying at the Tamen house. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  • We watched some of Celtic Collections in iPlayer - an interesting (and successful) fusion of modern electronic and traditional folk music. It reminded us of an awesome concert by the Welsh supergroup Pendevig we attended during the Eisteddfod a few years ago.

I bought Granny Feet tickets to see Skerryvore (a folk rock band local to us but currently on a UK tour) for her birthday and her and Grampy Feet enjoyed it very much.

It looks like there won't be as many hangovers in Edinburgh as usual on Wednesday; Hogmanay has been cancelled.

My brother and s-i-l are very pissed off: their flat has a spectacular view of the fireworks. :(
  • Disappointed to hear that the bomb found off Newhaven harbour in Edinburgh had to be hauled out to sea for detonation. Our friends who live just up the road would have enjoyed the spectacle if they could have done it a bit nearer. But it was a real WWII bomb, so they couldn't take risks.
