    She was indeed. RIP.
  • She got kids reading.

That is God's work if you ask me.

Amen @Sandemaniac , my thoughts exactly.
  • Somebody who really was an icon. Her work for children's literacy, the money she gave to help develop a Covid vaccine, her promotion of vaccination - a truly wonderful woman.
    RIPARIG 🕯
  • This dignified statement has been released by her family.

Trump has ordered half-mast flags for a week.
  • As well as her wonderful philanthropic work, I always had the impression that she never forget where she came from and was a very down to earth person, admired by many. May she rest peacefully.

Such a remarkable woman. Great performer, creative song writer, smart businesswoman, generous philanthropist, funny, kind, supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, faithful Christian.

On the last point, one of the songs she loved and felt honoured to sing was Don Francisco’s remarkable “He’s Alive”, the story of Jesus’s resurrection. Don. who is still around, is noted for his story-telling songs, as is Dolly.

One of my favourite quotes from Dolly is about her famous hair!

“People ask me how long it takes to do my hair I don’t know. I’m never around when it’s done!”

Absolutely one of a kind. Heaven is richer. She’s alive in an even bigger way now.

I forget how old I am! “He’s Alive” is about 50 years old. Here is a video of about similar age. The video definitely shows its age, but it’s a great song. And if you look carefully you can see a young Dolly Parton engaged with the song.

My favorite was when Barbara Walters asked her how she’d like to be remembered in 100 years.

“I think probably what I’d like people to say 100 years from now is, ‘Boy, she looks great for her age.’”

Some deaths hit hard. This is one of those.

May she be bathed in the light of a clear blue morning.

Agreed. Following recent horrid bereavements I was surprised how hard the death of someone I didn’t know hit me.

But another remarkable quote to go with yours.

“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!”

Humour and humility rarely combined so well.

    She really was a one-off.

    Tim Curry has died.

It's not a good week for famous 80-year-olds with great make-up. RIP Tim Curry.

Driving around town, I saw several places with their flags at half staff and knew immediately who was being honored. She was a true reflection of Jesus.

    And Jaye P. Morgan??

    You mean:

    THE JUICY!!

    JAYE!!

    P.!!

    MORGAN!!

(I really think of that show as being like the dregs of the rat pack-adjacent trying to coast on the boomers' conceptual and raunch humour.

There was a Canadian skit show in the early 80s called Bizarre that gave off the same vibe, and I'm pretty sure shared a talent overlap with The Gong Show(Billy Barty was on Bizarre, for example). But it had a real premeditated vibe to it, sorta like a dirty Carol Burnett Show.

There's one particularly awkward moment from The Gong Show immortalized on YouTube. (Anyone interested in seeing it can figure out their own way through a search.)

The act consists simply of two contestants entering the stage and performing extended visual double entendres of a pretty outrageous nature. They manage to survive without getting a gong, and then Judge Phyllis Diller gives them a zero, saying simply "I didn't understand that at all". Which I personally took to mean she did, in fact, understand it, but didn't feel comfortable even acknowledging the nature of the joke.

Jaye P. Morgan, on the other hand, just rolls with it, delivering not the most original comeback by any means, but definitely the sorta thing the moment demanded. I kinda felt sorry for Diller, as these things go. She seemed pretty caught off guard, and wasn't even able to give one of her trademark cynical-old-broad quips.

    Sorry. Didn't quite finish this...

But [Bizarre] had a real premeditated vibe to it, sorta like a dirty Carol Burnett Show.

I meant in contrast to TGS, which was mostly improvisational with a more anarchic ambience.

Just reading up on Morgan's legendary Gong Show tenure:

Apparently, TGS was originally a live daytime show on a network, accompanied by a syndicated version that ran at night(the latter being the only one I recall seeing). Jaye P's infamous wardrobe transgression happened on the live daytime show and got her banned from that slot, but she was still allowed to continue in the syndicated version for a while.

Morgan also did interviews for the fictionalized Chuck Barris autobiographical film Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind. The version I watched in Korea did not include them, but I gather she cast doubt on Barris' more extravagant claims.

    Slightly NSFW YouTube:

Gong Show Uncensored: Gene Gene The Dancing Machine

Worth watching if you're in the right mood. It's just raw, unashamed goofiness, and everyone seems to be having an absolutely great time.

It has been reported that Barry Rogerson, former Bishop of Bristol died on the 20th August 2026 aged 90. He retired in 2002.

It has also been reported today that the king of Norway, Harald V has died, aged 89. He is succeeded by his son Crown Prince Haakon.

  • King Harald was the last head of state to have personally witnessed events of WWII - he and his siblings were evacuated to the USA and he knew "uncle" Franklin Roosevelt.

    RIP King Harald. 🇧🇻

Also King Oyo Nyimbo of Uganda has died. A bad day for royalty I guess.
  • RIP to both kings.
