What comic books (including manga) are people reading in 2025?

What comic books (Marvel, DC, independent) are people reading in 2025?

Just finished Chip Zdarsky’s final issue of Batman.

Hellverine is interesting—it’s about Logan’s son Daken, who was killed and is now something like a combination of Wolverine and Ghost Rider.

Many more, but thought I’d start off the thread…

Ultimate Spider-Man, of course. Every issue that comes out makes 'best Spider-Man run ever' look a little less like hyperbole.

I'm following Jed Mackay's Avengers and Moon Knight, and Ryan North's Fantastic Four, but only in trade paperback.

I'll probably do the same for the other Ultimate books - I've heard good things about the Ultimates title; and Mackay and Simone's X-Men, about which I've heard fewer good things but I like Mackay and Simone.

Just read Ultimate Spider Man Married with Children Vol 1.for last night's graphic novel book club. Weather kept me from attending.
  • I'm afraid I stick to the 1950s stuff I grew up with - Dan Dare. Oh, and Calvin and Hobbes of course, which I devoured in my 40s. Oh, and Asterix!

My trouble is that they keep canceling the books I like. I was enjoying Doctor Strange, but that's no longer being published (I presume until they finish with the Doctor Doom, Sorcerer Supreme storyline--although why they would not do a Strange book to run simultaneously with that story arc is a puzzle to me)(after all, Strange started as just a Master of the Mystic Arts--he does not have to be Sorcerer Supreme in order to have good stories).

I am following Fantastic Four, which has been very good.

Sadly, Batman Beyond folded, but I have started on the current Batgirl series (with Cass) and enjoying it.

I am trying to get interested in JSA, but it has been a tough slog. I am still reading it to give it a fair chance, but I find that I do not get upset if I miss an issue. That is Not A Good Sign.

I presume Mackay has done the stories he wanted to with Doctor Strange and doesn't want to be overstretched.
I think not every writer could have pulled off something like the God of Dogs plot beat, but Mackay did - partly because it arose organically out of the story and partly because it didn't feel cynical or sentimental.

It has, hasn't it? North's been leaning into one and two issue stories, but I think it works with the FF.

What did you think? I thought the pacing was a bit forced - in part Hickman was reacting to the (apparently widely disliked) storyline in the main Spider-man title - but I thought all the emotional beats were great even if they were in a bit of an odd order if you don't the metatextual reasons he's paced it that way.

It was my second time reading it. Loved the story. I came to comics/graphic novels in my late 20s (mostly independent publishers) so I am not hung up on all of the traditional Marvel and DC universes. I just look for a good story.

A new Doctor Strange series with him in Asgard is coming out!

I prefer Geoff Johns’ JSA but I’m still getting this one.

    Loving Ryan North’s Fantastic Four.

Getting all the Logan Wolverine books, except for the Hickman miniseries and (at the moment) the Ultimate one. If it becomes less grim, I might get it.

The X-team books I’m getting are X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Exceptional X-Men, and Nyx. I’m enjoying the X-books again for the first time in years. (I didn’t like the Krakoa era.)

I am happy that a new Strange series is coming out. I'm not a big fan of Asgard, but I'll take it.
  • I am reading Dylan Dog. They are Italian language. The dialogue repeats words and phrases which is good for my level of Italian.

    I've heard of that character...

Oooh! We had all the Asterix books when I was a kid - everything up to Asterix and The Magic Carpet. Might see if the collection is still there, and if my brother wants it (well, it was nominally his...). Looks like there are a few new ones to hunt for.

The batman ones are derived from the original.

Here is a link to a description of the "Investigator of Nightmares".
