One is given an outline of a country, territory, French overseas department,
"Each guess must be a valid country, territory, ...
After each guess, you will have the distance, the direction and the proximity from your guess to the target location."
I failed today (admittedly only my second try). Admittedly I don't recall ever hearing of the place before

That's exactly what I do. Still normally takes me 4 or 5. My guesses however are always words that could be correct. Hence my formulation of Karl's Law.
Sluggish here, too. I should have had the upper left on Guess 7 if I had thought some more. That would have given me two tries on the lower right. And, if so, I think I would have got it on my 9th guess.
Does anyone else play Duotrigordle? It's 32 games in one, but I find the layout better than Quordle and Octordle, and it's fun to play.
This has probably been already discussed, but I'm trying the starter word 'salet', recommended by the MIT researchers who worked out with an algorithm that 'If you play SALET and you play intelligently you can assuredly win the game within five guesses.'
Because I am in bed with covid and not much else to do, I have been playing this word again and again on a practice wordle-type site, and I've played 120 games. I mostly get it in three, but always have got it within five so far.

Unfortunately, the article does not explain why SALET is better than any of its anagrams (TALES, LEAST, STEAL, SLATE, for example).

It is in terms of how the algorithms do - which word gives the lowest number of guesses. I would deduce it is about placement of the letters. If a certain letter is already in its correct place, that lowers the possibilities of words it could be, and some letters in the correct place will be more useful than others. And there are the most number of words beginning with S, for instance. I am finding placement useful from playing it, anyway. The T in the right place is particularly useful.
Yes. My thought is that it was about optimal placement of the letters, but I’d have been interested to see that explained, and some description of the kind of programming assumptions that are in place. Otherwise it’s a bit like saying ‘Their big computer gave answer X, but our even bigger computer gave answer Y’. So ours, being bigger, must be right. I’m not saying it’s not true, just that the information provided gives no meaningful evidence.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to explain, but if you play a lot of games using salet, you start to see for yourself how it works. I got an unusually high number of words on my second try, often words that I wouldn't have got if it had been an anagram of salet, because it would have left several possibilities, but with the letter placements of salet meant only one possibility.
