    IIRC & AIUI:

Penny has tried, long and hard, to get better situations in place, to get help for the woman, to get the local powers that be (PTB) to do what they should and get stuff done. She's talked to all sorts of people, and I know the problem with getting a signature for the tradespeople to prove it's ok for them to do the job has come up before.

I think maybe the son had difficulties with the woman, after trying for a long time, and pretty much ran away screaming when there was a chance of any relief. IIRC, he had some difficulties of his own, too.

I suspect that views on this situation depend largely on the Shipmate's own experience with bureaucracies, etc., and other situations they've heard of. I know that dealing with bureaucracies at all is almost always a royal pain. Being in the right (and having proof) is no guarantee of getting any help at all. Even if you have advocates. (And sometimes advocates quit doing the direct interceding with bureaucrats, authorities, agency workers, etc., because it's disheartening and they did it for years already.)

Systems and safety nets don't always work.

Penny S keeps opening her door and letting D in. She's been advised not to, but keeps doing it.

In the late 1970s we got a power of attorney for my mother-in-law which included the phrase , "whether of sound or unsound mind"; this was in North Carolina.

The following was posted by @Lothlorien, mistakenly, on the Bad Samaritans thread in Hell. I don't blame her from getting it in the wrong place, as Penny S's saga seems to be threatening to take over several threads here.

This thread has moved well past its remit. If anyone has new ideas for help, please PM Penny S but no more here. Yes, I am aware I also posted recently on it and see it did not really help. But nothing helps. Could all refrain from giving further advice or comments.

The thread was for minor grievances and short moans were fine.

Please drop further comments on this AS thread on anything to do with this topic as of now.

New whines suiting original purpose of things are fine. Just nothing more on this.

    Thank you all.

Now, I have an ingrown toenail...

I'm reposting it here now, as it's probably the middle of the night where Lothlorien is.

    Thank you.

  • So annoying and dangerous too as it can be blindingly bright.
  • PigletPiglet All Saints Host, Circus Host
Absolutely - why are modern headlamps made so bright, and so blue?

I've seen D. slow down quite suddenly, thinking that there might be a police car in the offing (over here I think you have to pull in if there's an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing, even if it's coming the other way).

TICTH June, because it's cold and dark. I have damaged some muscles and ligatures at the top of my leg and the cold makes the pain worse. I just want to hibernate and re-appear next spring.

I am seeing a physiotherapist and she is helping, and I am getting outside for exercise, but it always seems worse when the days are shorter. I might juggle some money from my winter power allowance account and go to Akaroa to see the dolphins. (Have already covered the power account, so I won't go cold).

British Airways. We were supposed to be flying today, with Heathrow as our hub airport. There is a strike at Aberdeen. The strike was advertised over a week ago. Last Saturday we contacted BA and asked if we should get the train to London and catch our flight from Heathrow but were told 1) the strike wouldn't affect us and 2) since we are booked from Aberdeen, if we were a no-show at Aberdeen (even if we'd told them that was what we were doing) we risked our whole flight being cancelled and 3) if we made our own way to Heathrow we wouldn't be entitled to compensation if it went wrong. Which it might (see 2))

Yesterday we got an e-mail from BA which said:

We’ve been made aware of industrial action at Aberdeen Airport on Friday 7th June.

The airport have assured us that they will have robust contingency plans in place to avoid any disruption, and we plan to operate a full schedule as normal.

We are advising customers to allow extra time to get through the airport.

We look forward to welcoming you onboard.

    Best Regards

We are checked in and good to go.

    Guess what has happened??
  • North East QuineNorth East Quine Purgatory Host
And Aberdeen Airport who are still stating that they "would like to take this opportunity to reassure our passengers that robust contingency plans will be in place to ensure Aberdeen International Airport is fully operational on Friday 7th of June."

Except it fucking isn't, is it???

Only a fortnight until the days start to get longer - that may help.

It's that flippin' "R" word again: Management in many areas use the term "Robust" for anything that (to me at any rate) appears ill-considered, inflexible, take-it or leave-it and generally poorly thought out and pigheaded.

There, I'm finished with the "R" word. What does the team think? Is there a more sophisticated interpretation?

BA have transferred us to a later flight. It'll be a tight, but do-able connection at Heathrow.
  • la vie en rougela vie en rouge Purgatory Host, Circus Host
A word to the wise: make sure you have everything you need for at least 24 hours in your hand luggage.

My experience of a "very tight connection" due to late departure is that I made it onto the connecting flight but my checked luggage didn't 🙄
  • North East QuineNorth East Quine Purgatory Host
Yes, got enough in my hand luggage. But further fun. When BA cancelled our Aberdeen to Heathrow flight, they cancelled our whole flight, and then rebooked the whole thing. When we checked in online for our flight from Heathrow last night, we picked seats next to each other. We've now been rebooked to travel from Heathrow in different rows. Though we are flying overnight and the North East Man snores, so there may be advantages to this....

Thanks Gee D, it always does, even though I know it's a while before it will be perceptible, the knowledge that it will get better is a comfort.
  • I drove an hour and half to a doctor's appointment. No problem just check up post surgery for hubby. Lights off and door locked. This is a once weekly rural satellite office for the doctor his main office is in another place. I called the main office. The Office Manager said, "You are mistaken we cancelled all of those appointments and moved them to another day. " Me, "No we were not contacted by anyone." Main office, "Yes everyone was contacted and their appointment moved to another day I am sure you were called." Me "Then when is my new appointment?" Main Office, I can not seem to find any appointment listed for Mr Image." Me, " Could that be because we were never contacted?" Main Office, " No I am sure you were contacted but would you like to make a new appointment at this time?" Mrs Image very tired of driving up and down a mountain for nothing today.

That's what really pis*es me off - people who won't acknowledge that they may have made a mistake. We ALL make mistakes, being 'a miserable company of poor, perishing, sinners', and there's no harm in admitting it.

Having cancelled our 17.20 flight on Friday, and bumped us onto the 18.40, the 18.40 took off almost an hour late and we missed our connection. We were put up in a hotel in Heathrow overnight which was fine, but they rebooked us with tight connections all the way and we are currently stuck in Changi airport.

So BA have an ongoing CTH from me.

  • Good Heavens, North East Quine, this is going to be a trip to remember. No doubt years from now you will be talking about the trip from hell, and hopefully laughing with time passed.

Reminds me of an experience I had with a now defunct airline some years ago. I had to fly from Los Angeles to Kansas City on short notice. Was told that there are no available flights out of Los Angeles, but there is one out of San Francisco that has one seat left but it makes one stop en route. I took it.

So they flew me from Los Angeles to San Francisco and I boarded the Kansas City flight that made one stop. So far so good. But you'll never guess where the stop was. . . . [wait for it] . . . . LOS ANGELES!

I'm not sure this is actually so, at least in the UK, as it would (as Miss Amanda observes) negate the purpose of Power of Attorney.

    But IANAL.

    But IANAL.

There are two types of English power of attorney - a general one, which ceases with the loss of mental capacity, and a Lasting Power of Attorney, which has to be registered with the relevant agency, but is not affected by loss of mental capacity. It can be set up such that the attorney may not act until the donor loses capacity.

IANAL either, but I deal with these things a lot for work.

The season’s started. Two giant red itchy welts on my neck that are still huge even after taking anti-histamines.

Not if it means eternal drought.

We need water, whatever the conditions attached.
  • Quite.

I wasn't advocating Eternal Drought - just some nice, warm sunshiny days, with refreshing showers at whiles, but preferably overnight.

  • Summer has finally hit Arizona, so we have more than enough hot, dry weather. I'll ship some over by FedEx. (I assume sending it to "Bishops Finger, c/o The Episcopal Ark" will reach you.)

Seriously, of course, too much dryness is a Bad Thing. Alas, extreme weather, of various sorts, seems to be the norm in many parts of the world where such was not previously the case, for most of the time, at any rate.
